Seekogel (Ötztal Alps)

Seekogel from the east, in front of the Rifflsee

The Seekogel ( 3358 m above sea level. A. ) is considered the most rugged peaks of the Kaunergrat, a mountain range of the Oetztal Alps in Tyrol. The summit is a torn edge with steep walls to the north and south in a long ridge, which branches off from the main ridge east of the Kaunergrat between Watzespitze and Rostizkogel. To the north of the summit is the Seekarlesferner, east is the Rifflsee. From the east and west of the summit appears as spikes, from north and south as the Broad Wall. Even the slightest increase of the mountain is a serious climb, there are numerous, difficult routes, particularly the western ridge is considered a veteran summit exceptionally beautiful climbing.

Routes

The usual increase, also the way of the first ascent, via the south upstream edged WANDL ( 2893 m), the south wall and the east ridge ( UIAA III). This is a serious climbing in mostly solid, but not ausgeputztem and partly grassy rock. For assurance is to provide both themselves and must be protected by abseiling supplementary material. From Rifflsee needed to peak 5 to 6 hours.

Besides numerous other climbing routes on these peaks is mainly the western ridge ( UIAA IV ) is of importance, which is considered one of the finest Urgesteinsgrate Tyrol. This ridge was first climbed by I. Hechenblaikner and F. Harpf in 1903 in the descent. Access to the west ridge is usually from Riffelsee on Ostgratabbruch by on the northerly Seekarlesferner, can be of the Einschartung in West Ridge ( P. 3224 ) achieved. The most interesting climbing is directly on the ridge, but a lightning strike in 1975 one of the towers of the west ridge sharp shredded so that it can be solved only by a somewhat tricky crossing in the southern flank.
