Seine (department)

His was a French Territory, which included Paris and a ring of neighboring communities. His Prefecture was in Paris, the official number of the department was 75, which was disbanded in 1968.

General

The Seine was founded on March 4, 1790 as Département de Paris. In 1795 the name was changed in Département de la Seine and thus named after the Seine, which flows through the department. From 1929 until its dissolution in 1968 was the department of the city of Paris and 80 independent municipalities in the area. It included 480 square kilometers, of which 22 percent belonged to the city of Paris. It was divided into three arrondissements: Paris, Sceaux and Saint- Denis.

Population

In the first census in France ( 1801) had the Seine 631 585 inhabitants, 87 percent of them in Paris, and was the department with the second highest population (after Nord) in France, more populous than the densely populated new départements in present-day Belgium and the present Netherlands. With the growth of Paris and its suburbs, the department grew to 5,700,754 inhabitants in 1968, of whom lived only 45 percent in Paris itself: The Seine was now by far the most populous of France, too big to be even governable. For this reason it was decided to split it up on 1 January 1968 in four smaller departments.

Division

On 1 January 1968, Seine was divided into four departments: Paris (75), Hauts -de -Seine (92 ), Seine- Saint- Denis (93) and Val -de- Marne (94).

In detail procedure was as follows:

  • The city of Paris was made into a separate department and kept the alphabetical order now incorrect number 75
  • 29 municipalities of the former departments of Seine and 18 municipalities of the department of Seine- et- Oise ( which was also released in 1968 ) formed the new department of Val -de- Marne. The new department assigned serial number 94 was previously used by the Territoires du Sud, the part of the Sahara, which formerly belonged to the French part of Algeria.
  • 27 municipalities in the departments of Seine and 9 municipalities of the department of Seine- et- Oise were grouped together for the new department of Hauts- de -Seine; the Hauts -de -Seine assigned serial number 92 formerly belonged to the department of Oran in Algeria.
  • 24 municipalities in the departments of Seine and 16 Municipality of Seine-et -Oise formed the new department of Seine -Saint -Denis with the number 93, which formerly belonged to the department of Constantine in Algeria.

It follows that the Hauts -de -Seine, Val- de -Marne and Seine- Saint- Denis (known in France as the petite couronne ) with the city of Paris together are larger than the former department of Seine: 480 square kilometers compared to 762 square kilometers.

In the census of 1999, the area of the former departments of Seine 5,203,818 inhabitants, or about 500,000 fewer than in 1968.

Follow

In the 1960s, it held the Seine generally too large to be managed reasonably can, so the change of the structures was welcomed. In the 40 years that followed, however, showed the consequences of unchecked growth, the failed urban policy and the lack of infrastructure in the suburbs - few have, for example, connected to the Métro network, therefore it is very expensive to go without a car in the city center. Were formed in some suburbs, particularly in the north and east, ghetto with a high immigrant population, high unemployment and high crime, while Paris itself more and more the residence of the wealthy was ( gentrification ) and the middle class was increasingly marginalized. Construction of the Boulevard Périphérique around Paris said the area also evident in two areas, in which more and more of the opinion in the outer ring, the rich people of Paris take care of themselves only to their own concerns, and leave the poorer population outside their fate. President Nicolas Sarkozy therefore announced in 2008 at a ambitoniertes project called Grand Paris, cancel the administrative separation between the core city and the suburbs and wants to create a unified management for the entire agglomeration.
