Selenium disulfide

As selenium sulfides is defined as the compounds of sulfur and selenium. The individual compounds occur after the production of the usual synthetic routes but as a substance mixture before, which is often called due to the average ratio formula also selenium disulfide.

Properties

The mixture of selenium sulfides consists of eight-membered rings with the variable composition ( SenS8 -n).

Based on the typical composition of the mixture with the ratio formula SES2 is often spoken of selenium disulphide. It has a melting point of <100 ° C, carries the CAS number 7488-56-4, is a bright - orange to red-brown, water-insoluble powder. By the action of acids produces toxic hydrogen sulfide fumes.

The compounds are used in pharmaceutical formulations as a mixture.

Production

The selenium sulfides can be prepared directly from the elements selenium and sulfur:

They also formed by the reaction of selenium (IV ) oxide with hydrogen sulfide:

Use

Selenium sulfides are a common component of anti -dandruff shampoos because of their fungicidal and at the same scale- dissolving action. These usually contain 1% of the active ingredient. In higher concentrations (2.5%) contained selenium sulfides in pharmacy- pastes and suspensions for the treatment of seborrheic dermatitis. Higher concentrations are available on prescription. Since selenium sulfides are not absorbed, there is no danger of poisoning with correct application of the products.
