Sellières

Sellières is a commune of 780 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011 ) in the Jura department in the Franche -Comté. It is capital of the canton of the same name and is part of the Local Government Association, Val de Brenne.

Geography

Sellières between Bresse and Revremont, 20 kilometers north of Lons -le- Saunier and 32 kilometers south of Dole between Toulouse- le -Château in the east and verse -sous- Sellières in the West. The Burn flows through the municipal area. The hamlet Baudin belongs to the municipality.

History

Excavations in Sellières finds from the Gallo -Roman Age ( 52 BC to 486 ) made ​​. Was first mentioned in records the village in the 12th century.

Attractions

The town house, Hôtel de Vaudrey was built in the 18th century, using parts of the fortifications of Sellières. The fortifications were from the 15th century. The right tower of the main building stands on the site where there was a gate in the middle ages. In the same street is the Hôtel Doroz, which was built in the 15th century. From that time, however, only one tower has been preserved. The building was rebuilt in the 18th century. The Hôtel Poly was also built in the 15th century and rebuilt in 1713. All three of Hotels are privately owned.

The Mairie ( mayor ) was built in 1832 and also served as a school. It stands on the site of a former barracks of the Cavalry of Louis XIV (1638-1715) had been established and was used until the French Revolution.

An original chapel de l' Assomption ( Assumption into heaven ) was built in the 14th century. Get it is only a bell tower from the 15th century. The Parish Church de l' Assomption built in 1787, and the work had to be interrupted because of the French Revolution. 1843 the new building was destroyed. The bell tower is owned by the community. The parish church of Saint- Pierre, built around 1865, it has no bell tower.

The old oil mill Ménétrier now serves as a sawmill. From 1894 to 1900 it was used as an oil mill, after which it became more and more used as a sawmill. Parts of the sawmill burned down in 1975. It was rebuilt and enlarged thereafter. In 1995, employed two workers.

The Market Hall was built around 1857 in the style of classicism, there the grain trade took place.

Economy

Major lines of business of Selliérois are farming, viticulture, fruit growing, bee-keeping and breeding of domestic animals. There is a diamond factory and a dairy on site. Local products are wines of the AOC Côtes du Jura, Apples and Comté cheese.
