After the death of their father they are, as well as her mother and younger sister, Margret forced to leave their previous home ( the estate Norland Park ), as Mr. Dashwood's son inherits the estate from his first marriage and claimed for themselves. Elinor, with nineteen the oldest of the Dashwood sisters, leaves her home reluctantly, because there her brother Edward Ferrars remains, in which she has been in love soon after their introduction. Since his mother but a financially appropriate partner wants for her son, the pretty, but almost destitute Elinor makes a priori no exaggerated hopes. This leads to the fact that her younger sister Marianne sometimes doubts Elinor's affection for Edward, because she does not believe that true love can so easily be suppressed, as Elinor seems to do.

Marianne is "rescued " soon after her move from the handsome Mr. Willoughby when she sprained her ankle while walking and can not walk. The open and emotional Marianne does not take long to fall in love with its charming savior, this seems to return her affection. So it is no wonder that Marianne shows no interest in the older and more reserved Colonel Brandon, who in turn falls in love with her.

After some time, mutual rapprochement and joint undertakings Willoughby travels hastily and rushed to London from without Marianne specify a reason. Marianne - which was provided on that day fixed with a marriage proposal - is heartbroken and sinks into self-pity. Since it has an invitation to the neighbor Mrs. Jennings, who wants to take them and Elinor to London, just right. Her sister is less enthusiastic because she has since learned that Edward - who also resides in London - is engaged for five years. Out of respect for his mother and sister, who suffer enough under Willoughby's behavior and because she was entrusted to a secret this information, Elinor, however, has anyone said anything about it, which is why Marianne firmly believes that Elinor would be happy about this opportunity. Elinor is overruled by his mother and sister, and they both travel with Mrs. Jennings to London. There it comes on a ball for reunion with Willoughby, who has replied to any of Marianne's affectionate letters. Contrary to expectations Marianne he treats her coldly. She is devastated when she finds out soon after his engagement to a rich lady. Again Marianne suffers infinitely and gives in to her grief. Shortly afterwards visited Colonel Brandon, Elinor and Marianne in London. He wants Marianne - which still hangs on Willoughby - help to break away from him and tells Elinor that Willoughby his ward - a young girl named Beth and daughter his first love Eliza - seduced and then sit pregnant has left. Marianne is now concerned with the question whether he was doing something similar with her. The news of Edward Ferrars engagement distracts however temporarily from: She's horrified that her Elinor could conceal this fact so long, and blames herself, because her sister was also suffering from heartache and they took care only about themselves. Edward himself is asked by his mother to break off the engagement because his bride is even poorer than Elinor, but he will stand by his word and is therefore disinherited. The helpful Colonel Brandon - the same fate has befallen - want to help the young couple and Edward Elinor offers over a benefice, which assumes that after a brief hesitation.

Marianne would now necessarily back to her mother. Unfortunately, she caught a cold on the go. Her illness - their ferocity Marianne ignored - is finally so bad that her life is in danger. In one of the following nights meets a resolved and in the meantime married a Willoughby, who has heard of Marianne's condition, inquire and wants to apologize for his behavior towards her. He indicates that he would have married Marianne, when his aunt would not have disowned him because of his previous misconduct with Eliza. Elinor promises to pass on his statements to Marianne, who thus now at least know that Willoughby has loved it.

After all these twists and adventures both sisters are glad to be back in her quiet house with his mother and sister. This rest, however, soon destroyed by the news of the marriage of Mr. Ferrars, Mrs. Dashwood makes clear for the first time, that Elinor suffers as much as Marianne, it just shows not so much. Elinor is very sad indeed and white at first nothing to do with it, as Edward later there is little in them at the door. After several inquiries about "Mrs. Edward Ferrars " comes out that Edwards former fiancee left the disinherited clergy fall and has married his younger brother Robert. Edward makes Elinor on the same day a request and both can be after the wedding in Delaware Ford down near Colonel Brandon. Now, since in addition to Elinor and Edward also Mrs. Dashwood uses that Marianne Colonel Brandon marries, this connection is only a matter of time. Marianne marries Colonel enamored with a genuine sense of appreciation that is only in the course of time to love.
