Sentinum

History

The city was 295 BC, site of the Battle of Sentinum during the third Samnitenkriegs, when a Roman army defeated the Samnites and senones.

In 41 BC there was a further siege: During the Roman civil wars of fighting under Emperor Augustus Salvidienus Quintus Rufus Salvius tried to take the city. He succeeded after a long siege, and he had to destroy the city.

1890 first archaeological excavations in the city Sentinum by Italian T. Buccolini were made. He found in the ruins including the pictured above mosaic from the 3rd century AD, now in the Glyptothek in Munich.
