Sepp Zeilbauer

Sepp Zeilbauer (actually: Josef Zeilbauer; * September 24, 1952 in Miirzzuschlag ) is a former Austrian decathlete, who took part in the Olympic Games three times in the decathlon.

Career

Zeilbauer occurred in 1971 shortly before his 19th birthday at the European Championships in Helsinki and improved in fifth with 7841 points ( 7783 ) the national record by Horst Mandl and at the same time his own junior world record. In this competition he had already improved with 2.04 m in the high jump for the nine -year-old national record of Helmut thunder. The following year he took part in the Olympic Games in Munich in 1972 and was with 7741 points ( 7694 ) ninth. In 1973 he moved from Miirzzuschlag for ATSE Graz. This season, he improved the national record twice in Innsbruck, he scored 8136 points ( 8112 ) and it also improved the national record in long jump at 7.55m.

In 1974 he reached the seventh place at the European Championships in Rome with 7792 points ( 7726 ). 1976 succeeded once again for the MLG from Miirzzuschlag starting, the all-around meeting Götzis the national record at 8310 points ( 8219 ), his fifth and final improvement of the country cup record. With this performance, he finished in Götzis second place behind the German Guido Kratschmer. At the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal Kratschmer was second. At the European Championships in 1978 scored in Prague Zeilbauer 7988 points ( 7969 ) and took fourth place. In the bronze medal by Siegfried Stark from the GDR however, he had more than 200 points behind. In 1980 he reached at the Olympic Games in Moscow in fifth place with 8007 points ( 7989 ), one place behind his fellow countryman Georg Werthner.

Zeilbauer was 1973, 1974, 1976, 1978 and 1981 Austrian Champion in the decathlon, where he more than a decade dominated the decathlon in Austria together with Werthner. In addition to the decathlon Zeilbauer won more championship titles: 1971 in the pentathlon in 1974, 1978 and 1979 in the 110- meter hurdles as well as 1975 and 1976 in the pole vault.

In contrast to George Werthner Zeilbauer was also the Mösle Mehrkampf meeting in Götzis quite successful. In six starts from 1976 to 1981, he won twice, in 1977 and 1981, and was once each second and third. He thus contributed significantly to the popularity of this meeting in Austria.

1975, 1977 and 1979 won Zeilbauer the decathlon at the Universiade. In 1981 he completed his studies and ended his career.

Sepp Zeilbauer is 1,92 m tall and weighed 93 kg in his playing days. He is a teacher at BG / BRG Oeverseegasse in Graz for the subjects of sports and athletics philosophy and holds courses at the Karl- Franzens- University of Graz from.
