Septimus Winner

Septimus Winner (May 11, 1827 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, † November 22, 1902 ) was an American author, songwriter and teacher.

Life

Winner attended the Philadelphia Central High School. He wrote several lyrics as the author. Here, he used several pseudonyms Alice Hawthorne, Percy Guyer, Mark Mason, Apsley Street, and Paul Stenton.

The song Ten Little Indians goes back to the song Ten Little Injuns from 1868, originating from Winner. The word Injun is a corruption of the English word Indians for Indians. Therefore, the song was initially by Indians and not by Negroes.

Septimus Winner in 1970 was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
