Sequin

Sequins ( the word is used almost exclusively in the plural ) is the name for small ( Ø 4 mm to Ø10 mm), usually round or oval, flat or faceted ( bowl sequins ), very thin sheet of metal or plastic coating.

Use

With sequined clothing or parts of them are decorated. In light and movement glitter and shine them complex. There are also so-called holo sequins, in addition to shine like hologram foil in the light in several colors. Are sequins sewn on either ( but they are provided with a small hole ) or glued on.

In the years around 1960 succeeded in Switzerland, applying sequins with embroidery machines, and thus was the only affordable use in fashion possible.

The term comes from the French word paille straw and originally meant straw, litter, but also stains in metals. Originally sequins flat rolled wire rings ( see also Flitter ) were prepared and were thus colored metal (gold, silver, rare copper). Modern plastic straws are made in many shimmering metallic colors. The sequins are sewn attached to both the dress (evening dress, silk scarves at the Oriental dance, costumes and dance dress ) as well as for decorating accessories ( handbags, hats and pointed shoes ).

Also as straw or Paillettine is referred to in satin weave a fine dress or blouse fabric of silk, half silk or rayon.
