Sergei Preminin

Sergei Anatoljevich Preminin (Russian: Сергей Анатольевич Преминин, scientific transliteration Sergei Anatol'evič Preminin; born October 18, 1965 in Skornjakowo, Vologda Oblast; † 3 October 1986) was a crew member of the Soviet submarine K -219 and prevented the risk of his life a meltdown. He was posthumously appointed to the heroes of the Russian Federation.

Life

Preminins father was an electrician and his mother worked in a flax mill. The couple had three sons. Sergei went to school in the city Krassawino and decided to follow in the footsteps of his older brother. As Nikolai he graduated from the engineering school in Veliky Ustjug in the Vologda Oblast. On October 23, 1984 Sergei was drafted into the Soviet Navy. He served on the K -219, a Soviet strategic nuclear-powered submarine.

Preminin died on October 3, 1986 in hot reactor chamber of the submarine when he prevented an impending meltdown by a reactor scram. Posthumously, he was awarded the Order of the Red Star.

Honors

  • He was named posthumously to the hero of the Russian Federation by decree No. 844 of the Russian President on August 7, 1997.
  • In the place Krasawino a monument was erected in his honor.
  • In the closed city Gadschijewo a monument was erected; there is also a road and two schools were named after him.

Reception

The sinking of the submarine and were Preminins role model for the American thriller Hostile Waters, which was produced in 1997, directed by David Drury of the Warner Bros.. Rob Campbell played the role of Preminin.
