Sergei Shmatko

Sergei Ivanovich Shmatko (Russian: Сергей Иванович Шматко; born September 26, 1966 in Stavropol ) is a Russian politician and businessman. Since 12 May 2008, he was Minister of Energy in the Government of the Russian Federation.

Shmatko studied from 1983 to 1985 in Sverdlovsk (now Yekaterinburg ) Mathematics and then did his military service in the Northern Fleet of the Soviet Navy from. After his army service, he took up studies in economics and went to Marburg in 1990 to complete this study in Germany.

He began his professional career in 1992 as an auditor in Frankfurt am Main. Subsequently, he was a consultant for investors in Russia and representatives of the Russian privatization authority in the European Union. In 1997, Shmatko in the energy industry, first as an economist at the nuclear power producers RosEnergoAtom. Parallel to his professional activities, he graduated from the Military Academy of the General Staff of the Russian armed forces. In 2005, he became Chief of State Group Atomstroiexport. In this role he was also responsible for the construction of the Bushehr nuclear power plant in Iran.

On 12 May 2008 he was appointed Minister of Energy in the Government of the Russian Federation. Shmatko is chairman of the board of the state-owned company Transneft, which operates the oil pipelines in the country.
