Sérgio Buarque de Holanda

Sérgio Buarque de Holanda ( born July 11, 1902 in São Paulo, Brazil, † April 24, 1982 ) was an important Brazilian journalist, writer and historian, who distinguished himself particularly in the fields of social science, social history and politics. He is the father of musician and writer Chico Buarque and a cousin Aurélio Buarque de Holanda, editor of the famous dictionary in the Portuguese -speaking world, which is (similar to the "Duden " in German ) colloquially often called " Aurélio ".

Activities

In addition to his work as a journalist for newspapers such as O Progresso ( Cachoeiro de Itapemirim ) or Jornal do Brasil (Rio de Janeiro) de Holanda also taught at universities in Brazil (eg, Faculdade de Filosofia at the, Letras e Ciências Humana in São Paulo) as well as to American and European. He was also director of the Divisão de Consulta da Biblioteca Nacional do Rio de Janeiro (Rio de Janeiro ) and President of Seção do Distrito Federal da Associação Brasileira de Escritores. In 1957, de Holanda, among many other awards, awarded the Prêmio Jabuti de Literatura, the main Brazilian literary award.

Raízes do Brasil is considered his most widely known work, and is also one of the most important Brazilian essays on the social history of the country.
