Serhiy Scherbakov

Serhiy Gennadievich Shcherbakov (Russian: Сергей Геннадиевич Щербаков, other spellings known; born August 15, 1971 in Donetsk ) is a retired Ukrainian football player at the position of midfielder.

In 1993 he had to because of a serious injury after a car accident to end his playing career and has since been confined to a wheelchair.

Career

Youth and club career

Shcherbakov began his active career as a football player in his hometown in the youth department of FC Shakhtar Donetsk. From there he moved in 1988 to the first team of FC Shakhtar Donetsk in the highest league of the Soviet Union. After that he was in the top division from 1988 to 1991 over three seasons running, before the Soviet Union disintegrated by the Alma- Ata Declaration on 21 December 1991. He then played one season (1992 ) in the newly formed Ukrainian Premjer - Liha, the top division in the Ukrainian football.

His professional debut was on June 6, 1988 in a 1-3 defeat against the Kazakh club today Qairat Almaty. Overall, he came to 52 league games in the Soviet Union, as well as 18 missions in Ukraine.

1992 signed Shcherbakov finally a four -year contract with the Portuguese club Sporting Lisbon tradition. After only 25 completed championship games and five hits in six months the career of the young midfielder should take a dramatic end on 14 December 1993. In a serious car accident in which he drove at a red light, he was rammed by another vehicle from the side. Internationally

At his first international appearances Shcherbakov came to U -17 national team of the Soviet Union. So he came to a total of 31 missions in the junior national teams. In the U-18 Football Championship 1990, he was with the U-18 selection of the Soviet Union European champions after the team defeated the Portuguese U-18 selection in the final 4-2 after a penalty shootout.
