Serooskerke (Walcheren)

Domburg ( Zeeland: Stroskerke / Seros ) is a village in the Dutch province of Zeeland in the peninsula Walcheren. It belongs to the municipality of Veere, and has 1791 inhabitants (January 2010). It is a typical village of Walcheren: a small center, consisting of the church with churchyard, around which some farms and houses are grouped. Immediately east of the village, the N57 runs from the north-eastern Eastern Scheldt storm surge barrier in the direction of Middelburg. West of the village leads the N287 after Oostkapelle.

History

In 1966, the village gained its fame through a historical find. A farm worker met with field work on gold coins. Systematic excavations revealed a treasure trove of more than a thousand gold pieces together. The coins dated from the late sixteenth and early seventeenth century. Never before has such a lot of coins had been found in the Netherlands. The treasure was worth around 340,000 euros, to which the City was entitled to half of the money and built a new swimming pool. In 1979, again a find of 850 silver coins was made. These are fully owned by the municipality of Veere.

Domburg was from 1811 to 1966 an independent municipality. After that, the village belonged to the municipality of Veere.

  • To the northeast, about 200 meters outside of the village on the N57, which is very well preserved octagonal windmill " De Jonge John " is from the year 1835.
