Features

The moths reach a wingspan of 25-32 millimeters. They have whitish- yellow to orange yellow forewing, on which a black wire mesh that goes to just before the wing tips can be seen. At the outer edge around the tips black dots are lined up. But there are also instances where the core network is absent and instead the whole wings are black dots visible. The wings drawing is highly dependent on the inhabited altitude. More than 2,000 meters, the moths have only the striped pattern, while increasingly found among animals with point drawing.

The caterpillars are about 22 mm long and are black. They have yellow spots on five longitudinal rows. Her hair is exceptionally long and black.

Occurrence

The animals are only found in the Alps 1000-3000 meters above sea level in open and rocky terrain and rocky, sunny meadows. They are very common on the site. The flight time is strongly dependent on the altitude and varies from April to October in.

Way of life

They are diurnal and fly in the night no light sources, as do other diurnal tiger moths.

Food of the caterpillars

The caterpillars eat yellow lichen ( Xanthoria parietina ) and other lichens.

Course of development

The females lay their eggs on stones. The larvae feed after hatching lichens growing on the stones. If they do not eat they hide under rocks. They overwinter as a caterpillar and are active on mild winter days and even take food. Depending on the altitude they pupate after one to three years in a fine weave under stones.
