Let the bear again! (1968, original title: Setting Free the Bears) is the first novel by the American writer John Irving and has been translated by Michael Walter.
The first novel by John Irving tells the story of Siggi Javotnik and Hannes Graff, two not exactly spoiled by success students. Among others, we meet in this story to a big city addicted girl from the country, the Austrian eagle, night watchman at the zoo, a mystical motorcycle champion, honey bees, Benno -Blum- band and an Asian black bears. It is a tragicomic and bizarre story. Most interesting from today's perspective, packaged in this story contemporary historical considerations of the Southeast European war and postwar years. This book already has all the advantages that characterize Irving's later books to an even greater extent. The story takes place partly in Vienna, but the language that is used in the German translation of the novel, is perceived by the Viennese as art language, especially because the lexicon contains words that are never used in Austria.
