Setting (narrative)

A venue is literally a "place to which judge the looks ". A synonym for this is the place of action. The terms are used in two different but often overlapping meanings: You can place call on which one told or played action takes place ( diegesis ), or the venue of a theater scene, or the type of storytelling, writing or reading.

The scene of a film is often different from the original location, and the scene of a play is usually not the venue: In a play that is set in Venice and is listed in Berlin, Berlin is the venue of the performance and Venice the scene of the action listed.

Also in the literature, this distinction plays a role: the scene of a story more or less different from the locations of the narrator, the writer and the reader, even if they turn their attention to this remote location. When you define an event independent of places where it takes place ( "murder" ), then referred to a concrete place of execution as the scene (see the scene ). Therefore, the terms overlap contradictory, what is intended in fictions often.

The theater and the film of the place of action is mediated by the equipment or the production design. The atmosphere of the real Aufführungs or film set also plays a role, although they usually differ from the location of the action shown. Even on a " original location " trailing action is different - at least temporary - of their model.

In both meanings of the place of action both established villages as well as less precisely localized, more atmospheric places (forests, fairs, etc.) may designate. The latter transport a local color that corresponds to the topic or genre. - While classic horror films often play in castles or palaces, the place of the action of home movies or novels is a scenic or rural environment. In theater, the stage machinery with the decoration cooperates cinematic records can by special effects and visual effects, the characteristics of the action map support ( for example, with fog an eerie atmosphere ). An important role for the characterization also plays the acoustic atmosphere.

In addition to the location of the action and the characters of the story ( Personage, Dramatis personae ) are for a game of significance and are listed along with him on the first page of dramas or scenarios.

Jurisprudence

In the jurisprudence of the concept of local action is in tort law and criminal law of demarcation to Erfolgsort ( place where a legal right is infringed by the act).
