Severo Sarduy

Severo Sarduy ( born February 25, 1937 in Camaguey, Cuba, † June 8, 1993 in Paris, France) was a Cuban poet, dramatist and critic of Cuban art and literature.

Life

Sarduy acquired the Bachillerato, the Cuban university entrance qualification, in Camagüey and began in 1956 to study medicine in Havana. After the successful Cuban revolution, he worked for the Marxist leaves Diario Libre and Lunes de revolución.

As Sarduy 1960, to study at the École du Louvre in Paris, he joined acquaintance with the intellectual group, which published the magazine Tel Quel. Among them was the philosopher François choice Sarduys was later life partner.

Sarduy worked as a reader and critic for Éditions du Seuil and as a producer for the biggest TV Télévision Française Radio - diffusion.

1972 Sarduy won for his novel Cobra the French Prix Médicis. He is considered one of the largest Spanish- written essayists and poets of his time and is next to José Lezama Lima, Virgilio Piñera and Reinaldo Arenas one of the most important Cuban writers of the 20th century. A part of his work deals explicitly with male homosexuality and the transvestism.

In addition, he was also a more or less secret painter. After his death, a major retrospective of his work at the Museo Reina Sofía in Madrid was shown.

Sarduy died of AIDS shortly after he had completed his autobiographical work pájaros Los de la playa.
