Sevettijärvi

Sevettijärvi [ sɛvɛt ijærvi ː ] ( skoltsamisch Če'vetjäu'rr, North Sami Čeavetjávri ) is a village in the municipality of Inari in Finnish Lapland. It has about 350 inhabitants and is situated in the north of the municipal territory around 120 km northeast of the village of Inari 35 km from the Norwegian border. Sevettijärvi is located on the highway that leads from Kaamanen after Näätämö to the border crossing to Norway and on to Kirkenes. Sevettijärvi presents itself not as a closed town but as a very widely scattered street village where the houses are lined up on a length of not less than 60 kilometers at some distance from each other on the street.

The inhabitants are mainly Sevettijärvis Skolt which were after the Second World War from the territory of Petsamo ( Pechenga ) which Finland was forced to cede to the Soviet Union evacuated. The village was founded in 1949, as here 51 evacuated families were settled. The road link was completed in 1971. Today Sevettijärvi is the largest skoltsamische settlement. The village has a school, a health center, a bar, a food stand, a butcher and a reindeer constructed in 1951 Orthodox church, which is dedicated to Saint Trifon of Pechenga.
