Seymour London

Seymour B. London ( born July 1, 1915 in Detroit, † July 14, 2010 in Miami Beach ) was an American physician and inventor of the first automatic blood pressure monitor.

Life

Born in Detroit, he moved as a teenager with his family to Miami Beach, Florida, where he graduated in 1932 at the Miami Beach Senior High School. He earned his bachelor's degree at the University of Florida, received a master's degree from the University of Michigan and received his MD from Harvard Medical School in 1940. He did an internship on cardiopulmonary medicine at Bellevue Hospital Center. Here he met his future wife, Rose Perrone, a medical student, know. After completing his medical training, he returned to Miami Beach and operation 50 years a medical practice together with his wife, who died in 2008. They helped in the founding of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and the Miami Heart Institute at Mount Sinai Medical Center.

As the manual measurement of the blood pressure of his patient cost him a lot of time, London has developed a machine for the automatic blood pressure measurement. The original prototype of its patented device he constructed from an old blood pressure cuff, a mercury column, a pump from an aquarium and a microphone. To prove the accuracy of your unit led London and his wife by a double -blind trial involving 400 doctors at the annual meeting of the American Medical Association in 1965. The results of the study showed that there was no statistically significant difference between the automatically measured and the measured results by hand. The results were published in November 1966 in the Journal of the American Medical Association. In addition to the patent in the United States, the device was patented in France, Germany and Italy.

After his death, his daughter announced to donate the original model of the device of the Medical School of the University of Miami. London died at the age of 95 years at his home in Miami Beach from heart disease.
