Shabbethai Donnolo

Shabbtai Donnolo (* 913 in Oria; † after 982; Hebrew שבתי דונולו ) was an Italian physician and author of medical works. Most of the information to come Donnolo an autobiographical sketch he his most famous work, the Sefer Chachmoni (Hebrew חכמוני, for names, see also 1 Chr 1,11 EU) prefaced.

In his childhood Donnolo was kidnapped by Saracens, but ransomed by relatives from Southern Italy. There he remained and devoted himself to the study of both rabbinic literature and medical works of antiquity. He worked as a doctor and - in today's language - pharmacist.

In Jaffa, was the Donnolo Hospital, which was closed in 1980, named after him.
