Shabran District

Sabran (also Shabran ), formerly Dəvəçi, is a rayon in the north of Azerbaijan on the Caspian Sea. Capital of the district is the city Dəvəçi.

Geography

The rayon has an area of 1,088 km ². The area on the coast of the Caspian Sea and at the foot of the Great Caucasus is largely semi-desert. There are some mud volcanoes and mineral springs.

Population

The rayon had 2009 51.200 inhabitants.

Economy and Transport

In the region rugs are made. Beyond the region known are the carpets from the village Pirabedil. In addition, grain, wine, and vegetables are grown and operated livestock. In the village Gala Alti there is a sanatorium, which offers treatments with the local sulphurous mineral water and mud.

By Rayon leads the main street of Baku to Dagestan on the coast. In addition, the road runs to the capital of the neighboring district, Quba, by the rayon.

Attractions

In the ruined city Rayon Sabran is located on the Silk Road near the village Shahnazarli. The city, founded in the 5th century, was destroyed in the 18th century. In a museum in the city Dəvəçi finds from Shabran are issued. Close to the coast at 1200 m altitude is the fortress of Chiraggala. The first fort was built there in the 5th century by the Sassanids. In the 18th century the castle was an outpost of the Khanate of Quba.
