Shad

Feint ( Alosa fallax )

Alosa is a genus of fish belonging to the herring -like. They are distinguished from other genera in this family by their higher body and the fact that they spawn in freshwater rivers. The distribution of Alosa species extends across the Atlantic and the Mediterranean. The young fish of the genus Alosa live for one to two years in fresh water.

Individual species of the genus Alosa had a meaning for human consumption. This genus was particularly heavily fished during the 18th century. Traditionally, they have been caught along with salmon. On the east coast of the USA in particular, the caviar of these fish species is greatly appreciated. Due to the pollution of many rivers individual species within this genus have now become rare. The part belonging to this genus shad ( Alosa alosa ) was Fish of the Year 2004.
