Shagonar

Schagonar (Russian Шагонар, Tuvan also Шагаан - Арыг / Schagaan - Aryg ) is a city in the Autonomous Republic of Tuva ( southern Siberia, Russia) with 10,956 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The city is located in the Tuva depression between Westsajan and Tannu - Ola Mountains, about 125 km west of the capital Kyzyl Republic, on the left bank of the Yenisei. The climate is highly continental.

The city is the administrative center of the Schagonar Koschuun ( Rajons ) Ulugh -Chem. It lies on the A162 trunk road Kyzyl - Ak - Dowurak - Teeli and has a small airport.

History

Schagonar was created in 1888 and received after the Tuva connection to the Soviet Union in 1945 city law. Due to the flooding of the Sayano - Schuschensker dam the original city was abandoned in the 1970s and located rebuilt about 7 kilometers to the east and higher.

The place name derives from a Tuvan forming ( Schagaan - Aryg ) of the Mongolian designation Zaganaryg for white dry valley.
