Shakidor Dam

The Shadi Kor Dam (also known as " Shakidor " ) is located near the coastal town of Pasni in Balochistan province in southwest Pakistan.

The dam

The dam was completed in 2003. It is 40 km ( north ) of Pasni in the Province Gwadar ( Gawadar ). The following data are available:

  • Cost: 45 million rupees

Dam break and flood

On 10 February 2005 at 18:00 clock local time (14:00 CET, 13:00 UTC), a dam failure occurred.

The tidal wave reached Pasni after four hours. Many smaller villages along the way, including Sindhipuso ( Sindhi Paso ) and Turati, were flooded. Half Pasni stood with a population of 5000 people after about 1 m under water. Also the home of the provincial Minister Sher January Baloch was washed away by the tsunami, but his family saved.

The state of emergency was proclaimed in Pasni, Awaran and Kharan. The authorities sent thousands of troops to rescue operations in the area.

Further damage

A 40 km long part of the newly built Makran coast road connecting the region to Karachi, and several bridges (including the Cheel bridge ) were washed away. Witnesses said the floods had trucks and cars collected and washed into the sea. Many bodies were later found in the sea.

Also the start and runway of the airport of Pasni was unusable by the floods, the airport was closed. The generators in the power plant of Pasni were damaged, the power supply failed, and telephone lines were cut. Wheat and onion fields of approximately 40,000 acres (161 km ²) in Kharan and Awaran were destroyed, just destroyed a large number of cattle. The area of Babar Shor was also affected.

In Balochistan were left homeless by the storm total of around 25,000 people.

About three days later, on the night of the 12th to the 13th of February is another smaller dam that Gaggo Dam in Lasbela district ( Lasbella ), broken. This cost seven lives; twelve are still missing. Through this break eleven villages were flooded by the water.

So far, the floods a total of 360 people lost life. The casualty figures are, however, given very contradictory in the various reports.

Aakra Kor dam break

In the night from 2nd to March 3, 2005 broke another dam in Balochistan, namely the Aakra -Kor Dam ( Aakra Kor dam) in Gwadar district. Again, the cause was a two days prolonged heavy rain with flooding floods that overflowed the dam. A closure of the spillway was destroyed, with an uncontrolled outflow originated. Five villages were flooded, residents of the area were evacuated and thousands were brought to safe places. Concerns also were the places Sur Bandar and Gwadar. Of casualties has not been reported.

The jammed here river is the Sur Bandar River ( or its tributaries ).
