Shalva Chikhladze

Shalva Tschikladse, georgian შალვა ჩიხლაძე, ( born July 12, 1912 in Kutaisi, † January 14, 1997 in Tbilisi ) was a Soviet wrestler. He won a silver medal at the 1952 Olympics in Helsinki.

Life

Shalva Tschikladse grew up in Georgia where he started as a teenager with the rings. He was a member of a Soviet security organ Member of the Sport Club Dinamo Tbilisi and became one of the best Soviet wrestler in Greco-Roman style in the light heavyweight in the period around 1950.

In 1950 he won the first time the Soviet Championship light heavyweight after he previously could place a few times in front of the field in the league over the years. In 1951, he lost that title to August Englas, the Estonians from Tallinn. In 1952, he won back the title and was subsequently nominated for the Olympic Games in Helsinki. There he won the silver medal with wins over Umberto Silvestri from Italy, Max Light from Germany and the Olympic champion from 1948 Karl -Erik Nilsson from Sweden and defeats by Gyula Kovács from Hungary and Kelpo Grondahl from Finland.

After this great success, he withdrew from the international competition scene and also not to be found in the list of winners at the Soviet Championships.
