Shamian Island

Shamian (Chinese:沙 面 岛Shamian Dao ) is an island in Guangzhou, in south China's Guangdong Province. From the 18th to mid-19th century Shamian was the only place in China, were built on the western merchants their warehouses and factories. In 1856 the island was administratively on two concessions, one British and one French, divided. Shamian is about 0.3 square kilometers. From an administrative perspective, the Shamian Island is identical to the road district Shamian (沙 面 街道), one of 22 road districts of the municipality of Guangzhou Liwan.

Currently, Shamian is the site of many consulates-general and is visited by many tourists. Historic buildings, small parks and boulevards make it one of the most romantic places in Guangzhou. There are several hotels on Shamian, a youth hostel, restaurants and shops that sell mainly souvenirs, rarities and works of art.

The historic buildings in colonial style are on the list of monuments of the People's Republic of China.

Administrative Divisions

The Road Shamian district is made up of two residential communities. These are:

  • Residents Community Cuizhou (翠 洲 社区);
  • Residents Community Etan (鹅潭 社区).
