Shamkir District
Şəmkir, also Shamkir or Semxir, Russian Шамкир, is a rayon in Azerbaijan. Capital of the district is the city Şəmkir.
Geography
The rayon has an area of 1,660 km ². The country is located south of the river Kura, in the plane of Gandja - Gazakh. In the north of the Great Caucasus begins. There are silver and oil reserves.
Population
The district had 2009 190.400 inhabitants. These are spread over 53 settlements.
Economy
In the district especially wine, cereals and vegetables are grown and operated livestock. North of the city Şəmkir is a hydroelectric power plant.
Attractions
Near the capital, lie the remains of the ancient city and fortress Şəmkir. In addition, can be found in the district of Tower of Koroglu, and the stone monuments in the village temporal Atabey.
