The Shandong University ( in simplified Chinese characters :山东 大学, in traditional characters :山东 大学, Pinyin: Shandong Daxue, abbreviated as Shanda, Chinese:山大; Pinyin: Shanda, English acronym SDU ) is a public comprehensive university in Shandong, China. It is in relation to the number of students one of the largest universities in China and is directly supported by the government in Beijing.

Today's Shandong University is the result of several mergers and spin-offs and restructuring, have been involved in ie the passage of time more than a dozen academic institutions. The oldest predecessor institution, the Cheeloo University, was founded by American and English missionaries in the late 19th century. The Shandong University derives its official founding date of the Imperial University of Shandong (山东 大 学堂), which was founded in November 1901 as a second modern national university of the country.

The university has seven sites, of which there are up to a all in Jinan. A campus in the northeastern port city of Qingdao is under construction. The university was classified by the Chinese Ministry of Education since 1960 as a key institution.
