Shannonbridge

Shannonbridge (Irish Droichead na Sionainne ) is a small town in the townlands Raghra (Irish Reachra ) in Ireland. It has 221 inhabitants (as of 2006) and is situated in County Offaly on the River Shannon. About 10 kilometers north of Shannonbridge is the famous monastery of Clonmacnoise.

In Shannonbridge there is one of the oldest bridges still benützten Ireland. It was completed in 1757 and spans the Shannon. At the time of Napoleon, the town was heavily fortified by the British. Some sections of these fortifications on the west bank of the Shannon can still be seen today, including a fort, which is now used as a restaurant.

A few kilometers downstream there is a power plant that is heated with peat. It delivers 125 megawatts. The peat comes from the Blackwater Bog peatlands, which can be reached by railway.

The actor George Brent was born in Shannonbridge.
