Sheldon Roberts

Cornelius Sheldon Roberts ( born 1926 ) is an American metallurgist. He was in the beginning stages of semiconductor electronics employee of William B. Shockley and member of the Traitorous Eight ( German » The telltale Eight ").

Life and work

In 1948, he earned at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, a bachelor's degree in metallurgy and in 1949 followed by the master's degree. After his PhD (1952, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, MIT), he worked at the Naval Research Lab and at Dow Chemical in research.

Some time later (1956 ) he took a job in William B. Shockley's newly founded Shockley Semiconductor Laboratory in the working group, a division of Beckman Instruments in Mountain View (Santa Clara County, California ) on. However, this group did not last long. Already in 1957, leaving eight key employees, the research laboratory in a dispute with Shockley. These eight, including Roberst are called Traitorous Eight ( German » The telltale Eight " ) and founded after her departure, the company Fairchild Semiconductor. Fairchild Roberts was responsible for the production of silicon crystals. Later he founded with Jean Hoerni and Jay Last Amelco the company (now Teledyne ).
