Shenkeng District

Shenkeng (Chinese深坑 区, pinyin ShenKeng Qū, PEH oē - jī Chhim - khe ⁿ khu ) is a district of the city of New Taipei City in northern Taiwan, Republic of China.

Location

Shenkeng located on the northern and southern banks of the river Jingmei. The district is bounded on the west by the districts and Wenshan Nangang Taipei City and on the east by the district Shiding the city of New Taipei City.

History and Significance

The name of the district means " Tiefer Graben " or " deep pit ". The original of Taiwanese aborigines inhabited lowlands of today Shengkeng was settled in the 18th and 19th century by Chinese immigrants and reclaimed. The predominantly rural district is now mainly famous for its tofu, which attracts many tourists and has given the city the nickname " Tofu Town" introduced.

In the district Shenkeng is the private Tungnan University.
