The Sheppard Air Force Base is a military airbase of the United States Air Force in Wichita Falls in north Texas. The civilian part forms the Wichita Falls Municipal Airport.

Units and formations

On the Sheppard AFB there are two training organizations of the Air Education and Training Command. The 82d Training Wing trains technical ground staff, the 80th Flying Training Wing pilots. The latter is also the NATO flying school of the Euro - NATO Joint Jet Pilot Training ( ENJJPT ) Program. The ENJJPT Squadron is a multinational federation, are formed on aircraft of type T - 6, T -37 and T- 38 in the budding fighter aircraft pilots from Denmark, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Turkey and the USA. Because of the large share of the German squadron commander of the flying group ( 80th Operations Group ) is usually a German staff officer.

History

The 1,2 km ² large area for the airfield opened in October 1941 acquired the United States Army Air Corps for one U.S. dollar by a local farmer. The base was named after the late in April 1941 Chairman of the Committee on Military Affairs at the U.S. Senate, John Morris Sheppard.
