Shibuya-kei

Shibuya -kei (渋 谷 系Japanese, German as: " Shibuya style ") is a sub- genre of J-Pop and comes from the district of Shibuya in Tokyo. It can best be described as a mix of jazz, pop and electro.

The term Flipper's Guitar and Pizzicato Five were originally designated. Both bands are heavily influenced by the French Yéyé music. Other influences are lounge music and bossa nova. As the genre became known in the late 1990s, one other bands such as Puffy began to associate with it.

Some artists refuse the designation Shibuya -kei. The genre has been supported by local businesses such as the HMV Shibuya, Shibuya -kei CDs sold in the department of traditional Japanese music.

Contributed to the success of the scene also that the CD covers are decorated in the style of the 1960s and 1970s.
