Shift_JIS

Shift_JIS ( SJIS abbreviation ) is a character encoding for the Japanese writing system, developed by the Japanese company ASCII in cooperation with Microsoft. It is based on JIS X 0208 (JIS), shifts (shift ) but byte values to accommodate an additional 64 katakana characters in the range 0xA0 up 0xDF.

In contrast to the conventional JIS encoding Shift_JIS needs an 8 -bit medium for transmission. Unlike the competing 8 -bit format Shift_JIS EUC only guarantees that the first byte is located in the upper ASCII range. The value of the second byte can be either high or low. This makes the reliable Shift_JIS recognition difficult.

Shift_JIS EUC comes next, especially in Japanese websites before, rarely ISO -2022 -JP, while otherwise Unicode (especially UTF-8) is preferred.
