The Shihan is a grandmaster of the martial art. If he stands in front of a style or school, he will also Saiko Shihan (最高 师范, "supreme teacher", " style custodians" ) called. The title of Shihan is awarded and can not be achieved by graduations. The minimum requirement is depending on the martial art of 7th Dan. In the Iaidō - style Seishin -Ryu Iaido such as the title Shihan can be achieved at the earliest two years after the examination to 5th Dan and award of 6th Dan. This title is the example of Iaidō - style Seishin -Ryu is the highest title that can be added to achieve more such as the title of Hanshi (10th Dan ). If you get the 10th Dan and at the same time is the representative of Ryu, so you would then Hanshi Shihan. Since the individual Budō types can not be compared, at the individual levels such as 1st Dan Iaidō so can not compare with the 1st Dan Karate or Taekwondo 1st Dan, not even the 1st Dan within each Budō Art is comparable, as there are a wide variety of schools and styles.

More teachers this direction can also receive the title Shihan if they have dedicated themselves as well as the Saiko Shihan the preservation and promotion of this style. But this is at least the 5th Dan prerequisite, so they must have reached the completion of the normal teaching phase.
