Shomron Regional Council

Shomron (Hebrew מועצה אזורית שומרון, ן, Mo'atza Azorit Shomron ) is an Israeli regional government in Samaria in the West Bank. The seat of government is in Elon More.

Location

Shomron lies in the northern West Bank, in the hills of Samaria.

The regional administration is divided because of the size in three geographical regions:

  • Northern Samaria with a total population of about 2000 inhabitants, consists of the settlements: Chermes, Chinanit, Mevo Dotan and Shaked Reichan. The discontinued in 2005 settlements of Ganim, Kadim, Sa Chomes and only lie there.
  • Central West Samaria, with a total population of about 18,000 inhabitants, consists of the settlements of Alei Zahav, Awnei Chefetz, Barkan, Etz Efraim, Einav, Yakir, Kiryat Netafim, Ma'ale Shomron, Nofim, Pedu'el, Revava, Sal'it, Scha'arei Tikva, Schavei Shomron and Tzufim
  • Mountainous region with a total population of around 4000 inhabitants. A block with 3000 inhabitants is located near Nablus and consists of the settlements of Elon More, Bracha, Itamar and Jitzhar, the other block to the south with about 1000 inhabitants in the settlements Kfar Tapuach, Migdalim, Nofei Nehemiah and Rechelim

The villages Alfei Menashe, Ariel, Elkana, Immanuel, Karnei Shomron, Kedumim and Oranit are indeed surrounded by the territory of the regional administration, but now form independent local governments.

History

The name of the Shomron Regional Council refers to the historical region of Samaria. Israel occupied in the Six Day War of 1967, the territory of today's regional administration. It was founded in April 1979 for the settlements of Ariel, Elkana, Karnei Shomron, Kedumim, Kfar Tapuach, Mevo Dotan and Schavei Shomron.

Ariel, Elkana, Karnei Shomron and Kedumim in the meantime acquired the status of a parish or town council, although geographically situated within the limits of the Shomron Regional Council, but they now form a separate administrative unit.

In the Second Intifada from September 2000 to February 2005 43 people were killed in the field of regional administration in attacks by Palestinian terrorists.

In August and September 2005, located in the northern Shomron settlements Chomesch, Ganim, Kadim and Sa were only given under the Abkoppelungsplans.

The starting in 2008, completed barrier zerrschneidet the territory of the regional administration. The remaining settlements are scattered between the Palestinian territories.

The Shomron Regional Council is responsible for over 30 villages with a total population of 23,600 people in 2012.
