Shooglenifty

Shooglenifty is an innovative folk-rock band from Scotland.

Band History

The Scottish folk rock band formed in 1990 in Edinburgh Shooglenifty of the members of the pre-existing Cajun Band Swamptrash (which described their style as "Psycho - Bluegrass "). Some of the musicians had already gained experience with street music. Shooglenifty play purely instrumental folk rock, in which the melodies of fiddle and mandolin are played and the rhythm section from banjo, guitar, bass and drums there. Shooglenifty call their music " Acid Folk". Many of her pieces are hypnotic and fast-paced. A peculiarity of the sound image of Shooglenifty is developed and played by Garry Finlayson " Banjax ", an electronic, fünfsaitiges Banjo offers a different range than a conventional banjo.

While on the first two albums Venus only the instruments referred to were used in tweeds (1994 ) and A Whisky Kiss ( 1996), the band since the third studio album Solar Sheats (2000) now also used samplers and electronic sounds. The music is still always listen to their Celtic and folk traditions. Due to the exceptional art for folk bands, the band among the most innovative in the genre.

Met each other the musicians had the original line-up once while regular sessions in a music pub in Edinburgh. Up to the present has been preserved by the spirit of these early joint appearances that the band rarely rehearsed, but occurs more frequently. Correspondingly, two of the previously submitted six Releases Live Albums. Shooglenifty 've been seen in many countries, including Germany, Australia, India and Japan. Most concerts take place in England and Scotland, of course. In March 2006, an almost three -week tour led again to Australia.

Drummer James MacKintosh has played with many other folk musicians such as Capercaillie, Mouth Music, Sola, James Grant and Michael McGoldrick. Iain McLeod, who was heard on the first two studio albums on mandolin, now teaches students on this instrument. Luke Plumb, who has served since 2000, a place in the mandolin, was already with Simon Bradley on tour.
