Short Shifting

The term Short Shifting comes from motorsport and refers to the early upshift to the next gear speed before reaching the engine speed with the highest horsepower.

Normally in motorsports, the usable speed range is exploited to the maximum, to use the engine power completely and can get back to have a high speed in the area of maximum torque after the upshift immediately. Under special conditions this driving technique, however, is not desirable. These include lack of traction ( eg due to damp route), if too much power would be possible to turn the wheels and could not be converted into propulsion, engine problems ( for example due to overheating) or the protection of the vehicle technology or the fuel (in the formula 1) if it allows the racing situation (eg safer guide ).

Short Shifting usually reduces the burden of driving and tires, but is usually bought with lower average speeds.
