SÍ Sørvágur

SÍ Sørvágur, full name Sørvágs Ítróttarfelag ( " sports club of Sørvágur " ), SÍ abbreviated, is a former Faroese football club based in Sørvágur on the island Vágar.

History

The club was founded on 17 March 1905 as Sørvágs Bóltfelag ( "Ball Club of Sørvágur "). From written sources it is known that these five men from Sørvágur were the founding fathers:

  • Heini Joensen, or Heini í Nýggjustovu (1876-1968)
  • Joen Rasmussen, or Lodu Jógvan (1876-1957)
  • Olav Olsen, or Ólavur í Ólavsstovu (1868-1949)
  • Hans Ole Jacobsen, or Bíggjar -Hans (1865-1944)
  • Ole Olsen Emarius called Jens- Ólavur (1880-1964)

Soon, the club got its present name Sørvágs Ítróttarfelag, commonly abbreviated SÍ. The reason for this was that other sports, including swimming and handball, were popular in Sørvágur and these sports fans also wanted to join the club. While the interest in swimming soon fell asleep again, the handball section continued into the 60s. The late 70s was the volleyball section.

As with other Faroese clubs, there was initially no ordinary football field. Therefore amStrand Dungasandur was played. It was only on 19 April 1954, the first football field was put into operation. The place in 1979 was retreaded and got its present form. It was inaugurated on 15 March 1980 on the occasion of the 75th anniversary. The place in 1991 was equipped with artificial turf. For the 100th anniversary, a new artificial turf was donated by the municipality Sørvágur.

After the British occupation of the Faroe Islands in World War II there were many Vágar leftover barracks. There drew up the first clubhouse of SÍ. The hut was demolished in the 50's and replaced by a dance hall. Only in 1997 the SÍ got back his own clubhouse. Until then, only the dance hall and then the school were hired as temporary.

The greatest success was in 1947 the Faroe Islands Cup. However, some years later, the game operation almost came to a standstill as the men of Sørvágur sought their fortune in the fishing off Greenland. This was of course only in the summer months. It was only in the 60s got back into the club and in 1969 was SÍ winner in the second league (then Meðaldeildin ). But the very next year the SÍ could put together a complete team. 1972-75 they were again represented in the second league. 1976 was Sørvágur with two teams in the 3rd Liga in 1978 succeeded to rise again in the second league. In 1984, again the descent, and 1987 the rise.

1998-2003 SÍ Sørvágur was part of the merger FS Vágar. After the breaking apart of this project in 2004 SÍ stood in the third league, but could return almost immediately ascend to the second league, which is now called 1 Deild where you remained until the end.

The end of 2007 it was decided to again a merger with FS Vágar who at the time also in the second league ( " 1 Deild " ) played to respond, which officially came into existence on November 6, 2007. Together we are now operating under the name 07 Vestur.
