Side Impact Protection System

Side Impact Protection System ( SIPS ) (or side impact protection) is a system developed by Volvo safety concept in automotive engineering.

The elements of the side impact protection reducing discomfort to the occupants in traffic accidents, particularly in side impact collisions. Major characteristics include a crash- oriented design of the B-pillar, impact beams ( high-strength aluminum profiles ) and steel struts in the doors as well as specially designed seat -mounted side airbags and head airbag system ( IC Curtain ). In a severe side impact ( SUV or van in a sedan ) the impact forces are directed through SIPS via the doors to the cross member of the vehicle.

The seat area of ​​passengers is obtained by means of rigid pipes SIPS with the two front seats and at deformations of the body, as the seats are moved in the event of penetration of the door in the other direction.
