Sidney is on Lodgepole Creek and today's Interstate 80, owes its existence to the construction of the transcontinental railroad. The city was founded in 1867 by the Union Pacific Railroad and developed around the military base Fort Sidney, which was established to protect the line against possible raids by Indians.
Sidney is located approximately at the western border of the wheat belt; west of the city, the country will grow for the cattle used.
