Sidney Webb, 1st Baron Passfield

Sidney James Webb, 1st Baron Passfield PC ( born July 13, 1859 in London, † October 13, 1947 in Liphook, Hampshire ) was a British social scientist and politician ( Labour Party ).

Life

Webb was born into a middle class family. He was a lawyer ( barrister ) and member of the Bar Gray's Inn, London. He quickly made ​​a career as an official of the Colonial Office, but resigned in 1881 from the civil service from. In 1885 he joined the Fabian Society was founded earlier in the year that followed a reformist road to socialism. 1891 to 1910 he was one of the dominant members of the Council of the County of London. Together with his wife Beatrice, George Bernard Shaw and Graham Wallas 1895 he founded the London School of Economics and Political Science. 1902/ 03 he was one of the proponents of a new education law for London, which was soon adopted throughout England.

Webb was the author of several influential socio-political writings. Together with his wife he published two standard works on the history (1894 ) and function ( 1897), the British trade unions, which were repeatedly placed and also translated into German. Both works are considered the founding documents of the interdisciplinary research field of Industrial Relations (see Industrial Relations ). In 1909 he published, in turn, together with his wife, a report on poverty in England, who nudged reforms of the welfare system. His 1918 published font Labour and the New Social Order was adopted by the Labour Party as a party program.
