Siegfried Scherer

Siegfried Scherer ( born April 7, 1955 in Oberndorf am Neckar) is since 1991 Professor of Microbial Ecology at the Technical University of Munich in Freising- Weihenstephan and executive director of the Central Institute for Food and Nutrition Research ( AIM ). By 2006 he was honorary chairman of the evangelical community study word and knowledge, which represents a rating based on the Bible doctrine of creation.

Life

Scherer studied from 1974 to 1979 biology, chemistry and physics at the University of Konstanz. In 1977 he passed the state examination in chemistry and physics in 1980 and Diploma Exam in Biology. In 1983 he received his doctorate in plant physiology specialist. From 1983 to 1988 he was a research group leader at the Department of Physiology and Biochemistry of Plants at the University of Constance, in 1984 he received the Research Award from Byk. In 1986 he had a research stay for fieldwork in China and Mongolia at the Institute of Microbiology, Chinese Academy of Science, China, from 1988 to 1989 he was a research fellow of the DAAD at the Department of Biochemistry Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, USA. 1989-1991 he was a postdoctoral fellow of the DFG at the University of Konstanz. In 1990 he was offered at the Technical University of Munich. In 1991 he qualified as a professor at the Faculty of Biology of the University of Konstanz in the subjects of Plant Physiology and Microbial Ecology.

In 1991 he received the professorship at the Technical University of Munich and was appointed director of the Institute of Microbiology at the Research Centre for Milk and Food ( FML ) Weihenstephan appointed. From 1997 he was Managing Director of FML Weihenstephan.

In 2002 he was called to a professorship reached at the Veterinary University of Vienna, 2003, the appointment to the Chair of Microbial Ecology at the Department of Basics of Biosciences of the Science Center Weihenstephan of the Technical University of Munich.

In 2003 he was appointed Professor of Microbial Ecology and became the Executive Director of the Central Institute for Nutrition and Food Research ( AIM ) of the Technical University of Munich appointed.

Scherer research using genetic engineering methods to food-borne pathogens. His research group has developed a method to detect spoilage microorganisms in food at an early stage, and was awarded the 2005 Prize of the German Federation of Industrial Research Associations " Otto von Guericke" and the "good teaching "-Award Study Faculty of Biosciences. Other research focuses on taxonomy and evolution.

Scherer has published numerous research results on plant physiology and microbiology.

Creationism and Evolution criticism

Scherer has been known to criticize the theory of evolution in public discussions. He does not deny that evolution takes place, but believes that this only changes within each basic type ( micro-evolution ) and not to an increase in complexity ( macroevolution ) leads.

He describes himself not as a creationist, but was active in several creationist organizations. By 2006 he was honorary chairman of the evangelical community study word and knowledge, one of the most important organizations of creationism in Germany. Until 2003 he was a Fellow of the Discovery Institute (Seattle ), one of the leading institutions of the intelligent design movement. Today it distances itself from creationism, American-style.

Together with Reinhard Junker, he is the author of the controversial book Evolution - a critical textbook, the German School Book Prize of the " Learning for German and European future" ( LDEZ ) received in 2002, the books unique, " the students respect for God, charity, tolerance and dialogue to convey on the basis of its own high ethical Christian belief. "

The invitation to Siegfried Scherer for " Erfurt dialogue " in January 2006, initiated by the then Minister President of Thuringia Dieter Althaus, was withdrawn after strong criticism. The criticism came among others from the AG Evolutionary Biology of the Association of German biologists who " [ dealing ] primarily with religiously motivated Evolution criticism that comes from designated biologists and / or in the context of organized fundamentalist Christian groups (such as the is presented to study Community word and Knowledge ) " by the opposition in the Thuringian state parliament and critical reports in the media.
