Siemowit

Siemowit († 890 ) was a prince of the Polans in the second half of the 9th century, from the House of Piast. According to the chronicler Gallus Anonymus, he was the son of Prince Piast and his wife Rzepicha.

Life

Since Siemowit is only mentioned in the chronicle of Gallus Anonymus, its existence and reign are disputed since the end of the 19th century. After a minority opinion in Polish historiography Siemowit was devised by Gallus Anonymus or one of his oral sources. However, this thesis is as undetectable as the existence Siemowits. According to another view, it is at Siemowit actually one of the ancestors of Mieszko I. Probably the prevailing opinion in the Polish historiography of XX. Century. (including Henryk Łowmiański, Gerard Labuda, Kazimierz Jasinski ) holds Siemowit for a historical ruler of Polans from the IX. Century the other hand, the names of his wives, there will have been several, not well known by Slavic custom. Presumptive successor Siemowits is his son Lestek.
