Sigfrid of Sweden

Called The Holy Siegfried ( † around 1067), and Sigfrid, Sigfridus or Sigurd, was the first of several English missionaries who spread Christianity in Sweden.

He came via Denmark to Värend in Småland, along with his nephew Unaman (priest), Sunaman (deacon ) and Vinaman ( subdeacon ). These were 1008 killed when Siegfried stayed for the baptism of King Olof Skötkonung in Husaby ( Västergötland ). When he returned to Värend, he found a wooden bucket on a lake swimming with the severed heads of his relatives. In the nave of the Cathedral Church of Växjö their relics are buried.

Siegfried built in Southern churches and preached there. Sweden's first bishopric was Skara and Siegfried was Sweden's first bishop. In Växjö, where he died, he was buried. His shrine was destroyed in the 17th century.

Some details about him are controversial and come from a legend of the 13th century. In reality, it should be only example was the third Bishop of Skara: Adam von Bremen states that Skaras first bishop Thurgo said. Also, it is uncertain whether it was Siegfried who baptized the king.

His name day is February 15, attributes his episcopal garb and a bucket with three heads in it.
