Sigi Schmid

Siegfried " Sigi " Schmid ( born March 20, 1953 in Tübingen ) is a German - American soccer coach. He is currently coach of the Seattle Sounders FC in Major League Soccer.

Career

Teens

At the age of four years Schmid emigrated with his parents to the United States. The family settled later in the Californian city of Torrance. His university studies, he finished with a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics from UCLA and an MA in Business Administration from the University of Southern California.

Playing career

Between 1972 and 1975, Schmid played in midfield for the college team of UCLA. In the four years at the college team he always belonged to the first team and was one of the top performers in the team.

Coaching career

From 1979 he was assistant coach of the team and head coach in 1980. For 19 years he coached the college football team and won three times the College Cup ( 1985, 1990, 1997). He was also assistant coach of the U.S. national team during the World Cup 1994.

In 1999, he coached the Los Angeles Galaxy. His successes include winning the MLS Supporter 's Shield in 1998 and 2002, the U.S. Open Cup in 2001 and in the same year were winning the CONCACAF Champions Cup. During this time he managed the U-20 U.S. national team, which participated in the U -20 World Championship in 1999 under his leadership.

After the 2005 MLS season Schmid was coach of the Columbus Crew in Ohio.
