Siglufjörður

Siglufjörður (Eng. " Mast fjord ") is a commercial town in the municipality Fjallabyggð in the region Norðurland eystra. On 1 January 2009 it had 1277 inhabitants.

Geography

Siglufjörður located on the Tröllaskagi Peninsula in Northern Iceland.

History

In the time of the herring boom Siglufjörður had about 3,000 inhabitants. From the heyday still bears witness to the herring fishing museum and a herring festival. In June 2006, the borough Siglufjörður ( Isl Siglufjarðarkaupstaður ) was merged with Ólafsfjörður ( Isl Ólafsfjarðarbær ) and the community Fjallabyggð formed. With the formation of Fjallabyggð Siglufjörður moved from the region Norðurland vestra in the region Norðurland eystra.

Traffic

Until the construction of the first long tunnel in Iceland - the Strákagöng - the place by land was difficult to achieve. From 2006 to 2010, the tunnel was built between Héðinsfjarðargöng Ólafsfjörður and Siglufjörður. The distance to Reykjavík is 401 road miles.
