Sigurd Haanes

Sigurd Haanes Clausen ( born August 1, 1913 in Oslo, † April 3, 1943 near Calverley, Leeds, United Kingdom) was a Norwegian ski jumper.

Haanes reached at the Nordic World Ski Championships 1937 in Chamonix -Mont- Blanc in ski jumping from the normal hill in fourth place and just narrowly missed a medal. In 1940, he jumped at Holmenkollen with a jump of 66 meters a new hill record. He surpassed his compatriot Reidar Karlsen only by half a meter. In the same year he was drafted into the army and took part in the Norwegian campaign as part of a ski season in part. After the campaign he traveled to Great Britain, where he made training as a pilot in the Royal Air Force. On April 3, 1943 Haanes died in a plane crash near Calverley.

Haanes Sigurd was the son of Thorgny Haanes and his wife Hedvig Kristine Clausen. He was also the brother of tennis player Johan Haanes.
