The Sikhote -Alin Nature Reserve (Russian Сихотэ - Алинский заповедник ) is the largest protected area in the Sikhote -Alin Mountains in Russia's Far East. It was founded in 1935 and covers an area of ​​4014 square kilometers. The reserve is part of the UNESCO World Heritage area Sikhote -Alin, which was added to the list in 2001.

Landscape

Approximately 99 % of the reserve is forested, with pine forests dominate. The area includes parts of the Sikhote -Alin mountain range and extends to the Sea of ​​Japan. The highest mountain is the Gluchmanka and reaches a height of almost 1600 meters. The other surveys of the reserve are significantly lower. In the area of ​​confluence of the rivers into the sea soft Serebryanka and Dschigitowka the mountains and hills of a flat valley floor. The largest river on the western slopes of the protected area is the Kolumbe, which flows into the Ussuri.

Fauna

The most famous animal of the reserve is the Siberian Tiger ( Panthera tigris altaica). About eight copies of this big cat live permanently in the reserve, while as many occasionally invade from surrounding areas.
